Star Apartments

Star Apartments is a creative solution for addressing the homeless crisis in Los Angeles. The building provides permanent supportive housing to 100 formerly homeless individuals as well as a Health and Wellness Center that includes a community kitchen, art rooms, running/walking track, and space for supportive services. Occupant wellness is encouraged through the use of an extensive outdoor patio space for community gardening, exercise and other group activities. The design was based on the adaptive reuse of an existing downtown Los Angeles concrete parking structure with unit spaces remotely pre-fabricated and cantilevered above. Working with these innovative material approaches helped this Skid Row Housing Trust project achieve a LEED Platinum certification. The US Green Building Council recognized this imaginative design and the project and verification teams’ efforts with the LEED for Homes 2015 Outstanding Affordable Project Award.
